Food as trends
What are food trends?
A trend is a permanent shift, the general direction in which a signal or something is moving. Trends can be local, regional, or national and can only last for a short time or remain fixed for years. Food trends are a widespread change in food preferences. Some of these trends have proven to be long-lasting. Food trends are often discussed in culinary magazines and on the internet.
When choosing food and beverage products that consumers like, there are three main aspects that lead them to try the products and continue to buy these brands. Flavor Color & Texture are three main reasons consumers continue to buy their favorite brands. Therefore, Flavor Color & Texture Trends play a major role in changing food habits.
Food Trends of 2021
By 2020, more and more people got accustomed to the ingredients they have at hand. With the luxury restaurant meals out of options and the well-stocked grocery shelves floating in the air, people learned to shop in the pantry and learned to turn overlooked canned foods and dried foods into a full and delicious meal.
- Mental Health Cooking
Food and nutrients play an integral role in maintaining overall mental and cognitive health. And after a long and arduous 2020, mental wellbeing has never been more important. With that people started to realize why eating for one’s mind and body is so much important and hence becoming a rising food trend of 2021. There are so many wonderful ingredients and superfoods that can boost your mood, soothe anxiety, combat depression and support your mental health.
- Flexitarian Diet
Increasing concerns about mental and physical health, not to mention the environmental impact, have led many to rethink meat-based diets. Many have completely abandoned animal foods in order to lead a healthier and more environmentally friendly life. Not everyone is ready or advanced to switch to a purely plant-based diet. As a result, there is a growing tendency towards "flexible" diets. The concept of being a quasi-vegetarian is simple. Meat is not part of a regular diet plan and is an occasional or weekend meal. It is still shown that reducing our meat consumption even a little is generally good for the environment and our general health. This is one of the biggest food trends in 2021.
- Low waste Food
With concerns of climate change on the rise, we`re more aware than ever of making eco-conscious purchasing decisions. This has, of course, trickled into the food scene, making low or zero-waste one of the upcoming food trends of 2021. Going low-waste with food means drastically reducing unnecessary packaging (especially plastic) and repurposing food scraps that may have previously ended up in the bin (like broccoli stems, carrot tops, and potato peels). There are many ways you can cut down on waste in the kitchen, and any step in this direction is a great way to kick off this crucial food trend in 2021.
