sfat are used for cooking at the table and added to processed foods. Dietary fat is composed of fatty acids. Of all fats, trans fats are the worst for your health. Trans fats are considered to be the worst type of fat you can eat. Unlike other dietary fats, trans fats increase "bad" cholesterol and also lower "good" cholesterol.


Sources of Transfat in food

Trans fats are made when food manufacturers convert liquid oils into solid fats such as shortenings and margarine. Trans fats are found in many fried foods, "quick" packages, or processed foods, including:

●       Baked confectionery such as cakes, cookies, and pies

●       Shortening

●       Microwave popcorn

●       Frozen pizza

●       Refrigerated batters such as cookies and rolls

●       French fries with fried foods, donuts, roasted chicken

●       Coffee creamer without dairy products

●       Stick margarine

 

How does it harm you?

Your body does not need or benefit from trans fats. Consuming these fats increases your risk of health problems. Doctors are worried about excess trans fats because of the increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and type 2 diabetes. Trans fats also have an unhealthy effect on cholesterol levels.  There are two main types of cholesterol:

Low-density lipoprotein. LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, can build up in the walls of arteries and make them stiff and narrow.

High-density lipoprotein. HDL, or "good" cholesterol, absorbs excess cholesterol and returns it to the liver.

Trans fats raise LDL cholesterol and lower HDL cholesterol.

When arterial fat deposits crack or tear, blood clots form that block blood flow to parts of the heart and can cause a heart attack. Or on any part of the brain that causes a stroke. Many high-fat foods such as baked goods and fried foods are high in trans fat.

Too much trans fatty acid intake can lead to weight gain. It may also increase your risk of type 2 diabetes. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems.
