The FSSAI, India's top food regulator, has released a draught of regulations on dairy equivalent standards that aren't derived from animals or dairy. All pre-packaged milk and milk products must have a logo, according to the law.

These regulations are clubbed together with fssai standards for milk and milk products. The draught states that all milk and milk products, including composite milk products, can use the following logo only on the product label.

These laws, known as the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2020, describe the dairy equivalent, its nomenclature, and critical composition and quality parameters, such as the standard for milk fat products. The draught has set a deadline of September 30, 2020 for stakeholders to submit objections and responses.

An imitation product that is designed or structured to mimic, or offered as an alternative/replacement to, a milk or milk product or composite milk product as defined in these fssai standards for milk and milk products by partial or full substitution of selected milk components with other components from non-dairy sources and is made entirely of non-dairy components, or in combination with dairy components., according to the draught regulation.

However, in the nomenclature of such items, dairy terminology or phonetically similar or spell alike phrases shall not be utilised. The name of the dairy ingredient used in the product must also be listed in the ingredients list, according to the legislation. In the case of analogue products, the remark "This is not a Dairy Product" must be made on the label.

FSSAI has created the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Thirteenth Amendment Regulations, 2018 by adding standards for ‘milk protein concentrates,' ‘whey protein concentrates,' and ‘Cow or Buffalo Colostrum and Colostrum products' to the “Dairy Product and Analogues” Regulations. The following definitions and standards for milk protein, whey protein, and cow and buffalo colostrum are found in Sub regulations 2.1.21, 2.1.22, and 2.1.23: 

Milk Protein Concentrate: Milk Protein Concentrates are complex milk proteins that, depending on their milk protein concentration, comprise both casein and whey protein in their native form in the same and similar ratio as milk. These are typically made by removing the majority of the lactose and soluble minerals while preserving the milk protein, then drying it. Milk, skimmed milk, cream, and water are used as raw materials for milk protein concentrates.


Whey Protein Concentrate: Non-protein ingredients are removed from whey to produce whey protein concentrate. Physical separation procedures such as precipitation, filtration, and dialysis are used, followed by drying.

These regulations relating to fssai standards for milk and milk products should be followed by dairy food makers. This is in regard to the generic provisions pertaining to milk or milk product definitions, heat treatment rules, dairy words, and vitamin additions.
